Topics
Employment
Do you have: A contract for your farm and estate workers? Seasonal staff? Long serving staff approaching or over retirement age? Are they employees or self employed - what difference does it make to you? Do you provide accommodation - who pays?
Kate Gardner, Partner in the Employment team and agricultural employment law specialist will guide you through the minefield of the latest employment law and how it affects your business.
Succession Planning
The Revenue tightly police the reliefs that apply to farmers and landowners and there are traps for the unwary. The availability (or otherwise) of tax relief will turn on the structure of the farming business and the underlying ownership of the farm assets. 'Non-farm' assets (e.g. cottages, light industrial lets etc) may also qualify for relief but only if they are correctly incorporated into the farming enterprise.
David Maddock, Associate in the Private Client Team will highlight the opportunities that exist to shield the value of farms and farming businesses from IHT.
Pre/Post Nups
Do you have a family farm or estate? And are you thinking about passing your farm/estate onto your children but are reluctant to do so in case they get divorced in the future? Have you considered pre and post-nuptial agreements but not sure how to approach it or how effective these agreements would be?
Daniel Eames, Head of our Family Team in Taunton and Farming Divorce specialist will take you through some of the key things you should be considering to protect the family farm/estate from divorce.
The lawyers will be on hand after the event to talk to you further should you have any questions and staff from Old Mill will also be attending and will be on hand answer any related questions on Accounts, taxation or pensions.
